Thousands of Words in Pictures

Who am I and why am I taking these pictures?

On December 8th of 1998 I started an online "journal" on one of the first "community" websites on the web.  After a year or so of writing I purchased my own domain name just to be able to add images to my writing.  My "journal" bio is on the primary nsrider.com website (link on the menu above) and you can find the bio here

I've been busy doing, but finally, after 10 years of publishing, have figured out a fast way to upload images and text without working with multiple webpages.  I've just officially joined the blog world.

I think this will be a great way to create a life log.

I chose this particular Wordpress premium theme because it allows for large images.  The big sky and expanse of the southwest lends itself to panorama images which I frequently stitch together.

I hope you enjoy the images.

Night of Light

It’s been a long time since I updated and with some time off between Christmas and New Years, hopefully I’ll get to fill in some blanks.

Meanwhile, the other night my wife had a party at the local aquarium and after the party ended I walked into the display called the River of Lights.

Without a tripod I was able to snap a few images that probably would not print well, but show off the lights without the full crowd of people that had been there earlier.

This truck was just outside of the gates to the park.

As I was inserting images I noticed that I was breaking my own rules, that of only inserting the best of, and leaving the balance to a real entry.

I suppose I should go ahead and do that, so for now, here is the best of.  The balance will have to follow on another day.

Happy Holidays and a Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it!

Morning glories

The mornings are getting quite chilly here in the high desert and pretty soon I’ll have to keep the top up on the mustang and switch to the winter car. Meanwhile I’ll drive with the top down as long as possible, which makes “photo opps” more reasonable in the mornings.

The drive I take follows the mountains on the east side of Albuquerque and looks down on the Rio Grande Valley some 600 – 800 feet below. I turn left and head down to the valley just a bit south of the balloon launching field. It’s no surprise these days to see balloons landing here and there, including right across the street, scraping the road and coming to a stop just feet from a road with a 55 mile per hour speed limit.

People here know to watch for balloons at this time of year.

I slowed down a bit and grabbed the shot as I was driving by.

Then just as I was about to turn into my office I stopped to take a shot so that I could actually have the office preserved for all time.  I don’t think I’ve ever taken another one of my office space and this was a good excuse.  Note one of the hazards that the pilots have to try and avoid, power lines, just at the edge of the vacant field next to our office.  This particular morning I think about 10 or 12 balloons came to rest on the grounds.

Right after I parked my car I got out and walked less than 20 feet to shoot this landing.

I went up to the office and figured that the balloons and I were done for the day…. till I looked up and watched these two race by my window.

In the lower left corner of the photo you can see another balloon about to land, right near the road that was in the first image.   You can also see here one of my favorite sights in Albuquerque, fog rolling over the  mountain from the east.  It only happens two or three times a year and I always like how the cloud spills over the peaks and heads on down the mountain.

On the way to work I thought that it was a calm morning because several of the balloons in the valley seemed very high.  Since high flights usually happen in calm winds, I thought that it must have been a perfect morning for flying.  After watching the news this evening though, I found out that there were several minor crashes on landing, fortunately without major injuries or damage.

That’s one thing about these playthings, once they are out of gas you come down where mother nature pushes you.

Tomorrow is special shapes day.  I’m thinking about getting up early to go shoot.  I was supposed to be climbing the mountain in the morning but my hiking buddy won’t get here till noon, thanks to American Airlines acting like an airline that deserves to go out of business.

I’m not really happy to get out of bed early in the morning, but…

maybe for special shapes.

(side note – these photos were taken with my cell phone camera which at 3.2 megapx is equal to the resolution that I had on my first “prosumer” digital camera that I bought for just under a grand in May of 2000.   Granted, it had all the features of a full blown camera, but for resolution, this phone is working out just fine.)

It’s that time of year again

I skipped it last year – but this year with company in the house.. it was time to treck off to the early morning events on Saturday.

bf1

The morning was not really sunny, but occasionally a shot of light would light the baloons against the darker sky.

We were late getting out of the house but at the end of it all, it really didn’t matter, because we did get to see most of the baloons launch.

Then it was off to Santa Fe for a drive up to the top of the mountain and the aspen trail  hike.

To show just how far behind I am, I did this very hike a year ago and still have not posted any of the images.

fcolor2

We stopped along the way to give me time to climb up the embankments and take some photos.

This one is about 2 or 3 miles before the aspen grove trailhead.

Best Sunsets of the week

I’m cheating Ippose, but then who is keeping track of when I post and in what order?

We’ve got house guests from Michigan and have been busy wandering around snapping photos of this and that and there has been little time to get the photos loaded onto the computer, much less edited and posted.

But tonight’s sunset prompted the posting of this first one on October second.

sunset10.2.09We had been chatting in the back yard and then did our usual move to the front balcony to watch the sun go down in the west.  My in-laws were quite impressed with the view and the afterglow that silhouettes Mt. Taylor some 70 or so miles away.

We love the big sky.

sunset10.6.009bI almost missed the show tonight.  I’ve been here 3 years and I still have not gotten used to how quickly the sky changes, especially as the sun is setting.  I looked, thought that things looked promising, and sat down to watch a bit of TV.  In the window behind the TV I saw a faint glow and jumped up and ran for my camera.

Both of these are taken with the long lens, but at least I’ve got something to show for it.

sunset10.6.09aIt’s a small slice, but a nice one.

Best of the Fair

Take an evening and stroll around amongst thousands and thousands of people, just about all of whom are in motion, and throw in the sights and smells of a State Fair and you can imagine how I spent Saturday night.

One can after all, be fashionable in the New Mexico night.

But you have to compete with this
