In the Face of Prudence

I don't covet much.

Really, I don't.

I'm pretty content when the bills are paid, and the furnace works and there is food in the freezer.

But I've got a decision to make tomorrow.

It could end up being a significant one, or then over time it could turn out to be insignificant. The problem is that you don't know about these things till later, and sometimes much later.

I confess, I've been coveting, and trying to convince myself that it's an ok thing to do.

Its long, and sleek and black

It zooms like there is no tomorrow

.and it is of course, expensive

It's in the league of the "big boys"

In a way, what this whole thing is about lots and lots of red Xes.

See em down there?

Each red X represents a photo that is somewhat corrupted, and even includes an error message when opened in Photoshop.

It appears that at high speed (3 frames per second) the camera just isn't working properly. Those were taken at the last hockey game I shot, and it's not just this camera, I went back and found some of the same corruption with the camera that I bought back in March.

The Nikon Rep is going to be at the camera store tomorrow (Saturday), and I've been told that she has authorized the trade of my existing body for either a new one (again) or a credit toward a purchase of a more expensive camera, one that comes, of course, without lenses.

It's possible that if I get a credit for all the gear I bought for this Nikon, I might be able to swing the purchase of the new body for just a couple of hundred bucks.

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, yes but don't you have to have lenses to take pictures?

Yeah... and that one up there, the 70-200 zoom with anti-vibration technology... that one costs more than the camera body.

And then, then there is the close up lens that costs about half that price, and then....

ok ok.. I could probably be quite happy with just 3 lenses.... but then I just don't know.

I don't envision myself the professional who is going to make enough money to pay for these things, so how does one justify such a hobby when there will be 2 kiddies in college next year.

Prudence...

sometimes I just want to slap that $*#& And then I see an image like this one (warning - if you opt for the large one it's 800k - but worth the wait. If you go look, you may want to click on the link that says New Window, and when the smaller image appears, let your mouse hover over it and a button will appear that makes it grow to full size) here

Prudence says, wait till the spring, the camera bodies will just improve and they always are announced at the March camera show.

Impatience says, yes but the hockey season will be over and that's it for the last of your kiddies at home.

Prudence says that's too much money to spend when you have looming bills.

Impatience says ....

I'm not repeating those words in here.

Prudence says Buy Cannon, that Nikon stuff is junk, look at all those red x's up there, and this is the second one you are going to have to return under warranty.

Impatience says Yeah but I'll get the camera body for just about nothing.

Who cares about a Cannon in the spring. Hockey is now.

Sigh.

Some days I'm prudent, some days, not.

Tomorrow is another day.
