Bell Tower at the St. Catherine's Monastery, Sinai Desert - Scan from a slide

The Belltower at St. Catherine's Monastery. Donated by Tsar Alexander II of Russia in 1871. The Russian Tsars considered themselves the successors of the Byzantine emperors who were the first patrons of the Monastery. The tower has 9 metal bells that are only rung on special days. The daily call to prayer is done with a wodden bell.
