{"id":417,"date":"2015-01-07T17:27:24","date_gmt":"2015-01-07T17:27:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nsrider.com\/journal\/?p=417"},"modified":"2015-01-07T20:22:04","modified_gmt":"2015-01-07T20:22:04","slug":"a-wolf-in-the-graveyard-of-the-volcanos-monday-january-5-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nsrider.com\/journal\/?p=417","title":{"rendered":"A wolf in the graveyard of the volcanos, Monday, January 5, 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I knew that the full moon has been given names at various times, and I&#8217;ve photographed some of them in the last several years. \u00a0I didn&#8217;t know that there was a name for each month&#8217;s <a title=\"Full Moon Names\" href=\"http:\/\/fullmoonphases.com\/full-moon-calendar-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\">full moon<\/a> until just a couple of weeks ago when I saw a poster advertize somewhere or another. \u00a0I didn&#8217;t pay it any attention until I saw the press about the wolf moon of January.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u00a0night I watched the moon rise and heard the coyotes howling and then wondered if I would wake early enough to see it set. \u00a0Although I did see it very early Sunday morning I decided that it was too early for me to be out on the cold porch to get photos. I knew that if I waited a day I would have more ambient light\u00a0on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>I set up the night before so that I would not have stumble around in the darkness looking for tripods and lenses and the like. \u00a0And as the moon rise \/ moon set tables predicted, there it was, right on schedule. The first image was shot at 6:53 am, and the final one just 21 minutes later. \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-418\" src=\"http:\/\/nsrider.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/WM1-1024x691.jpg\" alt=\"WM1\" width=\"640\" height=\"432\" https:\/\/nsrider.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/WM1.jpg 1275w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/>One has to be ready to shoot sunsets and moon sets at this latitude.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-419\" src=\"http:\/\/nsrider.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/WM2-1024x688.jpg\" alt=\"WM2\" 100vw, 640px\" \/>As the moon dropped lower and lower on the horizon, I worried that a band of cloud might obscure the final moments, but fortunately they thinned out in short order.<a href=\"http:\/\/nsrider.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/WM3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-420\" src=\"http:\/\/nsrider.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/WM3-1024x674.jpg\" alt=\"WM3\" width=\"640\" height=\"421\" https:\/\/nsrider.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/WM3.jpg 1244w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>For the first set of images I had my largest lens attached to a camera mounted on a tripod, but as the ambient light increased, I brought out the second camera, and rested it on top of the tripod mounted camera for a stable shooting platform.<\/p>\n<p>Without the zoom, the moon appears small on the distant horizon.<a href=\"http:\/\/nsrider.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/WM4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-421\" src=\"http:\/\/nsrider.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/WM4-1024x573.jpg\" alt=\"WM4\" width=\"640\" height=\"358\" dawn.<a href=\"http:\/\/nsrider.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/WM5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-422\" src=\"http:\/\/nsrider.com\/journal\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/WM5-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"WM5\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" on the horizon, still partially obscured by a thin band of cloud.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-424\"
