Early snow in the Albuquerque foothills

Photo of the Day, November 16, 2015

Just a couple of weeks ago I said that too soon, snow would come and it has.  An inch or two at our elevation usually means much more on top of the mountain.

A late night flight allowed for a full day in Rocky Mountain National Park and a long hike past waterfalls and to multiple alpine lakes.

Fall walk on the summit of the Sandias

Photo of the Day, October 11, 2015

The end of fall comes to the high country. Did the summit walk today in perfect weather at 10,000 ft plus (3,000 meters +) in shorts and a t-shirt.  Too soon there will be snow.

McCauley Warm spring in the Jemez mountains.

We’ve been back from Europe only a week and it’s time for a “local” vacation day. Sunday afternoon spent in the McCauley warm springs. The local “vacation” is in the New Mexico mountains near Los Alamos. Divine soak for over an hour with the springs almost all to ourselves the entire time.

Prequel to tonight’s big lunar event. I took this at 5 a.m. as the moon set over Albuquerque. We won’t be able to see the entire event here, as it starts in daylight but I hope to have some good shots of the total eclipse.

Sept122015

Photo of the Day, September 12, 2015

We spent the day hiking along the west side of the valley that overlooks Chamonix, France. Yesterday we looked down into the valley from the eastern side.  Both sides are fabulous, but the hiking is more in the open on the western side.

French-Alps from Italy
Crossing the alps from France to Italy by cable car

Photo of the Day, September 11, 2015

In Chamonix one can board a cable car to the Aiguille du Midi, below the summit of Mt. Blanc (the highest mountain in Europe).

Buried deep in the mountain is a passageway to another cable car system, which can take you across the back of the alps to high in the mountains above Italy.  From there you can purchase a ticket for more cable cars down to the Italian town of Courmayeur.

The year after we crossed the alps, many people became stranded because of high winds and had to spend the night suspended over the glaciers

A bus allows for a pleasant ride back through a long tunnel connecting Italy and France.

Coopers Hawk in the garden

Photo and Quote of the Day, September 4, 2015

Nature – wild nature- dwells in gardens just as she dwells in the tangled woods, in the deeps of the sea, and on the heights of the mountains; and the wilder the garden, the more you will see of her. (Herbert Revenel Sass)

The ultimate work-from-home project, writing a book.  Granted it’s a technical book, but it is a lot of work, however you look at it.

Moon rise over the Sandias

Photo of the Day, January 31, 2015

Great month for hiking on the top of the Sandias especially when I realized that I could catch the full moon rising.  Took my photographs and kept moving closer to the mountain so I could shoot the moon rising in shot after shot.
