I live in the great American west, what do you expect?

Full story here.

Panorama of the day, August 7, 2012

At first, this just might look like another one of my many lightning shots.

What you don’t know however, is that this is 100% luck.  It’s a daylight shot, and the only reason the lightning is in the image is that it flashed 3 times and after I pressed the shutter the first time, I was just lucky enough for it to have flashed the second time and I found it on my image.

What you also don’t know is that I really had no intention of trying to get a lightning shot out of this, I went up to the balcony to take a panorama of the late evening sky and all of the storms that were advancing across the horizon.  Shooting from left to right, I set up on this frame first, and poof, there it was.  It took a bit of work with the final images to keep the lightning from being “erased” from the panorama, but I finally figured out how to do it.

Here is the small version, 6 images stitched together.

You can see the larger one here.

Photo of the day, August 6, 2012

Back on April the 18th I posted a couple of photos of these orchids.  Here we are almost 4 months later and only two of the 6 blooms have dropped off, but the bottom one of these three is in danger.  I decided that I’d grab a last photo before they are gone for the season.

Smiling Jack, Photos of the Day, 8.5.2012

(edit – 8.10.12) Looking at a book about the Rio Grande Valley I  found the name of this creature – Flame Skimmer dragonfly.

I took the weekend off from the mountain, worked around the house, did some studying, swam and relaxed.

This morning I had a visitor and since he seemed to be willing to stay still for a few minutes, I went and grabbed my big camera and lens.  The first set I took with my telephoto, but after seeing them on the computer I went back outside and there it was, still hanging on to the stalk in my back yard.  I changed to a macro lens, and the last two photos were taken with it.

Personally, since the last two images were taken about 3 hours after the first, I think it’s a different dragonfly.

Looks like a smile to me.

Still smiling

Although the face looks different, the pattern in the right wing appears to be the same.  Maybe he decided to come back for an afternoon sun session.

You can check out the full sized image if you like.

It’s about time.

I looked in the archives and found that I have no photos in June, 10 series in July and 10 series in August.  Then there are a couple in September, and one or two in October.  And that’s that, that’s all you get.  I can’t believe that I have not had a single July image – but at least the process has started.

Although it’s not a great shot, it is interesting to me because of the sequence inside of the image.  What you have here are three different strikes, the one in the foreground is about 6 miles away, the one in the background is about 11 or 12 miles away and the third image, with the loop, is an air-to-air strike that never hit the ground.

There have been quite a few storms in July with lightning, quite a few I’ve seen outside of my office window.  The only problem is that they have all moved on by nightfall.
